Back To Our Past is promoted as a stand-alone event with its own entrance and identity, but with the considerable advantage of ‘piggy backing’ on The Over 50s Show and its advertising and promotion. This is the second ‘show within a show’ at one of the biggest and best attended events in Ireland: for the past three years, The Over 50s Show has also embraced The Coin and Stamp Fair which has proved phenomenally successful for both collectors, vendors and those seeking to have stamps/coins valued free by teams of experts.

Back To Our Past  offers genealogy professionals, publishers, websites, software and hardware providers, libraries and institutions a unique opportunity to engage with thousands of Irish seniors whose demographic represents a majority interest in the subject. And because the event has its own dedicated entrance, it will also attract visitors of all ages.

Ireland’s premier exhibitions venue

Back to our Past is staged at the Royal Dublin Society, Ireland’s premier exhibition and event venue which hosts the world famous Dublin Horse Show. It is situated in the leafy embassy belt of the city, but close to Dublin centre and is surrounded by numerous top class, restaurants, bars, and hotels.

The organisers: a formidable track record

Back to our past is organised by S&L Promotions Ltd which has over 20 years experience in running successful, diverse events. S&L were the first company in Europe to organise a public golf show back in 1992, and ran the tented village for The European Open Golf Tournament at the K Club – venue for the 2006 Ryder Cup -- for five years. The company has also organised food shows, recruitment fairs and IT events. For the past 11 years it has organised one of Ireland’s most successful events, The Over 50s Show, growing it year on year from 40 stands attracting an attendance of 5,000 to last year’s 280-stand event boasting an attendance of over 20,000. This year’s event will be even bigger.

What the exhibitors said about the first, hugely successful Back To Our Past event

Alison Crinion, Marketing Manager, The Glasnevin Trust

We would  would estimate that we spoke to approximately 2,000 people over the weekend and the interest in our stand was huge. As a marketing exercise and a brand promotion exercise, the event proved extremely successful.

Christine Deakin,  Irish Genealogy Solutions

"Many thanks for organising such a tremendous event. It was a great success for me, enabling me to have the opportunity to sell and gain awareness of my products and extend my customer base to the specific Family History / Genealogical group intended. I also ran out of some of my stock items, so I know what to bring with me next time!

Sandra McDermott,  Head of  Reader Services, The National Library of Ireland

The National Library was pleased to participate in the Back to our Past Show. We hold many sources for family and local history research including the Catholic Parish Registers on microfilm - one of the most important sources for nineteenth century family history research. As part of our commitment to assisting genealogy researchers, this show presented an opportunity for us to publicise our Genealogy Advisory Service and to promote the Library as major research centre.

Anne Marie O’Dwyer, The Library Council/askaboutireland.com

We were very glad to have attended the Back to the Past event. It was a great opportunity to meet and receive feedback from our service users and to demonstrate the Ask about Ireland website to those who weren’t already familiar with the service. It was also valuable to meet other providers of genealogy services and learn more about their new resources.

Dr Anne McVeigh, Public Records Office of Northern Ireland

A great show and a great crowd. We were exhausted at the end! Well done

Aideen Ireland, Head, Reader Services, National Archives of Ireland

Just a quick note to say how much the National Archives enjoyed  being part of the Back To Our Past Dublin Show last weekend. While it constituted gruelling work for our three representatives I estimate that a minimum of 500 people visited the stand each day.

I was amazed to find how little Irish people knew about tracing their families in the period before 1901 so a potential audience of 1500 has serious repercussion for the use of the National Archives Reading Room and Genealogy Service.

Without exposure at the Back To Our Past Dublin Show we would not know how much genealogical work is still requiring to be done!

I would like to congratulate you on this venture ad hope that we may be able to participate again next year.
